The cultural totem poles created at Wingate Avenue represent the history, place, traditions, stories and symbols of the diverse and indigenous families who belong to the local Ascot Vale community.
Totem Poles represent family and cultural heritage, stories, symbols and sometimes protection. Originally found in North America, Canada and Alaska created as part of Indigenous culture. Cultural Poles was developed with the occasional care staff, targeting its diverse families. Its focus was on community interaction, opportunity for story and celebration of difference. The site for the project is in the outside area of the Wingate Occasional Care Centre.
